The last few weeks of the school year are always a real contrast, depending on whose perspective you are taking. Our Year 6s are preparing for the end of their primary education and this is both an exciting and anxious time for them. As much as they want to move on and are looking forward to the new challenges of being at ‘big school’, it is quite a wrench for some of them emotionally and they are genuinely anxious about this next big step. We have worked closely with the staff at our secondary to ensure that all the structures and routines that they find supportive here will also be in place at the upper school for them. Many of you will already know that we have reorganised our staffing team to allow for two of our primary practitioners to be placed in Year 7 from September. Mr Mullins and Mrs Young will be familiar faces for the pupils in Year 7 and will be able to ensure that the transition is as smooth as it can be. We will be able to share with you all the details of new class groups during our celebration evening and Year 6 leavers assembly which will be held on Thursday 20th July at 6pm, and you will also have the opportunity to meet your child’s new teacher. From the staff’s point of view, there is no such thing as winding down – it is in fact the busiest time of the year. We are packing up classrooms, getting them prepared for new groups of children, preparing activities and resources for September, completing school reports, assessments, co-ordinating transition visits, organising leavers assemblies – the list goes on!

This morning we held our final Good Work Assembly of the year which, as usual, was extremely well supported by our families. The children all spoke confidently about the learning they have done this past term and were proud to share their achievements. Some fantastic work I’m sure you will agree! For this week’s blog, I have asked Mrs Young to share with us some of the work she has completed with Class 5..

This week in Maths we have been practising how to measure various objects, using small and 1m rulers. We have even had a go at measuring our own height. The children loved it as they were curious as to who was the tallest boy in their class..

Science was very exciting as we have finally seen the first leaves of our sunflowers. The children could not believe it how quickly the seedlings emerged from underneath the soil. They were very proud of their gardening skills and could retell the whole process of planting a seed and its life cycle. Brilliant work!!!

In our social time, we played with LEGO and created various vehicles and buildings, which looked really creative. This related to our topic of sharing and being a good friend in PSHE. The children tried really hard to use their manners and caring words towards one another..

In Literacy we carried out a tally chart questionnaire across the school and asked other children and staff what their favourite sandwich filling. The most popular choice was BACON. As we have been reading a book called The Lighthouse Keeper’s Lunch, we also shared our own favourite sandwich fillings. The boys were excited to learn that we would be going on a picnic so in order to do this, they had to write a shopping list of what we would need to buy, wrote instructions about how to make a sandwich and also learned how to make our own! Luckily, it was a beautiful and sunny day so we were able to eat our picnic on the tables near to our Forest School. They were delicious!

I’ve also included a few snaps of children who have been particularly proud of their achievements and have come to show me their work..

I’ve been lucky enough this week to be able to spend some evenings at New Bridge School supporting those students who were taking part in the end of year production, Aladdin & Jasmine. What an honour to be involved – they were amazing! All of the Spring Brook children were able to go over on Thursday morning too to see the show and they loved it. Mrs Chappell who organises these productions is going to let me know how our children can be involved next year, so watch this space…. Tonight (Friday), I will also be helping out at their Year 11 prom which is very exciting!

Well, I hope you all have a lovely weekend – I’ve got a kitchen to paint and would rather stick pins in my eyes to be honest. See you all next week!
