There has been lots of learning going on down at Heron Street this week, it’s hard to keep up with them!

Class 2 are kicking us off with news of some exciting Maths work that they have been doing. Kian’s cousin is the boxer Mark Heffron and he is lucky enough to be travelling to Newcastle in November to be ringside for his next fight! Mr Cruz decided to have the boys price up the most cost-effective way for the family to travel up north by using their Maths skills to do some budgeting – a crucial life skill, I’m sure you will agree. They have looked at the cost of different methods of travel and also compared the cost of various overnight stays. The boys then made recommendations to Kian’s Mum about the journey and the combined cost which I’m sure have been a great help!

In Art the boys used coloured pencils and thought about layering them to create shading on a tiger’s eye picture. Here are some examples of their work – they have done so well and are becoming really enthusiastic about their art work..

Class 3 and Class 1 have been very musical this week. I’ve seen Xavier leading Mrs Fisher and Miss Shortall in a rendition of ‘Saturday Night’, dance moves included (!) and Class 3 have all been choosing their favourite songs to learn Maths to. It’s great to see the children having fun and getting plenty of exercise during lessons – I don’t think they always realise that they are still learning! Class 3 ended the week with a trip to the Museum of Science and Industry where Mrs Pulman and Miss Cubach informed me their behaviour was impeccable. All the children understand that we expect the same of them out of school as we do in school and I’m pleased to say that they always do us proud when we’re out and about..

Class 4 have had an incredibly busy week and Mrs Makin has worked their socks off! It is wonderful to see them developing as a group and trying to support one another with their learning. They have been reading the story of The Three Little Pigs and you can see here their craft work..

..and some of the games they have been playing..

Kobi was very proud of his writing..

In English, they have been learning to recognise initial sound blends..

There are also some photos of last week’s visit to the Soft Play Centre that I forgot to include..

As a reward activity, the class chose some songs to dance to – they certainly know how to strut their stuff!

We have had a lot of ‘firsts’ this week too – in PE, Mr Hopkins introduced the children to Rugby and they found out what it was like to be a rugby player. Firstly the children completed a fitness circuit of bodyweight exercises and then followed that up with some tackling practice on a tackle shield!! Well done all – it looks like they had a great time keeping fit!

As part of their RE work on Diwali, Class 6 have been making some beautiful Rangoli patterns..

They are also continuing their work on electricity in Science with some hands-on experiments..

We have also played some new indoor sports at playtimes given the miserable weather. I found a table top table tennis set at home which I brought in and Abu, Christopher, Akash and Kian have had a great time trying (and failing!) to beat me. They’ve enjoyed it so much, we have ordered some additional sets so that more children can take part. Class 3 have been practising their Boccia technique too as they will be representing the school next week in the Local Authority Challenge..

We have met our new music teacher, the fabulous Mr Cooper. All of the classes will be working with him each Wednesday and the children really enjoyed their first session with him. We had a very excited Lucy on Friday as it will be her 8th birthday over the weekend – I think she ended up wearing more chocolate cake than she ate, but we hope she has a lovely party tomorrow!

Finally, we were thrilled to welcome a very special visitor – Miss Fell with her beautiful baby son Edward, known as Teddy. He is so tiny and was very well behaved, even letting all the children who wanted to have a special cuddle with him. Lucy felt very important as you can see!

That’s it from me, I hope you all have a great week!
