Our Silver Duke of Edinburgh’s groups were the latest of our determined young people to complete their practice expedition at the start of the Summer term. Mr Taylor, our DofE manager, was with them every step of the way and can tell us more..

Exploring the Derwent Valley ~ Silver Practice Expedition 30 April 2019

The Derwent Valley within the Peak District National Park was the target for two groups of students undertaking their Silver DofE practice. The routes undertaken would follow the Ladybower Reservoir (famous for its use during the Second World War, where pilots practiced the low-level flights needed for the “Dam Busters” raids) then part of the Derwent Heritage Trail. The weather was mild and sunny, ideal for walking..

Day one was the biggest challenge with the teams covering around 14k whilst carrying the equipment necessary for the overnight camp. A positive, no nonsense approach was necessary to overcome this which was definitely forthcoming..

Both groups arrived safely at the campsite (despite some students needing running repairs due to developing blisters). Team work and determination enabled the tents to be erected..

..and then it was time for food (thank goodness for boil in the bag cooking!)..

Day two provided another pleasant morning, where an early(ish) start was gained despite a few individuals needing a wake-up call. Pack up..

.., a quick breakfast, then on the trail again following the Derwent Heritage route along the banks of the scenic River Derwent through to Hathersage..

..then on to a well earned rest as the awaiting minibuses started the journey back to Oldham.

The practice expeditions provide a valuable opportunity for our students to hone some of those rusty skills and to gain an insight into what is to come. A really enjoyable and positive experience.
