I’d like to start this week’s blog by welcoming everyone back to the Learning Centre after the Christmas holidays and wishing everyone a very happy and healthy New Year. No doubt many of us may have overindulged over the festive season and have made New Year’s resolutions to be healthier. I’m definitely going to use my exercise bike more and eat less!!

In the same vein, I’d like to share news from Mr Lawrence’s Friday PE session. Here’s a brief report from the man himself:

A new term and a new topic for Year 12 students. To BOUNCE into the New Year and shake off all that Christmas excess we are working on our trampoline skills. We will be focusing on the safety aspects related to using the bed as well as learning new skills including shapes, twists, landings and hopefully somersaults. The sessions will be differentiated to allow all students to work to their level. We had our first lesson today and every student that got on the bed displayed some fantastic skills..

..especially Regan who was getting on the bed for the first time..

Umer, Kyle, Jason, Regan and Melissa all took part in the trampolining challenge to see who could do the least number of jumps in 20 minutes, meaning that the higher the students jumped, the less jumps they did. They all did really well, however the winner was Jason with a total of 16 jumps. Well done Jason!

They group also helped each other take place in a trust exercise which is a lot harder than it looks..

Elsewhere in the Learning Centre there’s been lots going on. On Tuesday, our young people started a 7 week project with Live Music Now to experience and participate in music performances with a group of talented brass musicians. The students loved working with the musicians and learned new skills in rhythm and co-ordination. The session was lots of fun and all the students had the opportunity to play the instruments and some even conducted the group, directing them to play in different ways.

Over the next 7 weeks the students will gain a range of skills whilst engaging in some really fun and exciting activities and they will also be rewarded with a live concert at the end of the project.

I look forward to being able to share some videos of the sessions over the next few weeks but for now we’ll have to make do with photographs..

The Learning Centre Parents Group will be meeting again on the 3rd February at 2.00pm. This will be an open meeting, where parents and carers can share experiences or concerns and hopefully feel supported and less isolated. Letters will be going home, however if you have any questions please do not hesitate in contacting the Learning Centre for further information.

Have a great weekend,
