Hi everybody, hope you are all well. This is John Barker (Deputy Head) writing a very succinct Learning Centre blog this week.
Wow, what a week. I have been at home for quite a period of time now looking after my daughter Hannah who attends Horizons. Hannah has slowly been reintegrating herself back into Horizons life but this has been her first full week since March. Consequently this has enabled me to get back to work at the Learning Centre. It is like I have never been away, taking into account the new norm.
I moved from working with the Year 7’s at the main site a few years ago and this has always been really beneficial as I have always known the vast majority of students coming through to the Learning Centre as well as their parents – up until now! I am in the process of learning the names of our current Year 12’s with Louis and Philip reminding me every time I see them.
It is so heart warming to see how resilient the students are. They are happy, settled and really enjoying College life despite the restrictions that have been put in place to keep everyone safe. They have adapted so well to the new rules regarding handwashing, wearing face coverings in communal areas, respecting social distances etc. Both myself and all the staff team are incredibly proud of them.
Following on from Judith Walter’s retirement last Friday, this Friday the staff team remotely celebrated Rita Moss’s last day with us. Rita has been with us across the Group for a long time now and has been a massive support wherever she has been based. There will also be a very belated card going to Andy Fairest who retired during lockdown. He has been a much valued member of our team at the Learning Centre for the last few years. We also very belatedly celebrated Jill Devenport and Tony Blackman’s 60th birthdays.
It really is great to be back but I will sleep this weekend – if Hannah lets me!
